The Schooner Atlantic

Frequently asked questions about the
Atlantic Project and this Website...

Q: What is a schooner?
A: From the dictionary: A sailing vessel with at least two masts (Atlantic has three),
the mainmast taller than the foremast, with all lower sails rigged fore-and-aft.

Q: How do I see this site on my phone/pda?
A: The WAP version of this site is under development, check back soon.

Q: Why does the Atlantic web site display badly on my computer?
A: Many things can cause the Atlantic site to be badly displayed. We'll try to avoid any controversy about privacy issues and list below some likely causes and their possible remedies:

  • We have noticed that your screen size makes a serious difference to the clarity of the pictures and the navigation buttons: Currently, 800x600 pixels gives the best results, and we are working on solutions for those with higher resolutions (Solution: Temporarily reduce the size of the browser window to 800x600, then reload the page).
  • Another problem is over zealous firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus software is blocking portions of the site to "protect you".
  • Nothing on this site represents a threat to your system, nor are there any pop-up, banner ads or other junk of that nature. Some software (such as Norton Internet Security or the otherwise excellent ZoneAlarm) detect ads where there are none, and removes entire sections of this site...
  • To see if this is your problem, set the firewall to display messages about what it has blocked. Then you can make a decision about if you want to see the "ads" it has removed. We recommend simply removing the ad blocking feature specifically from our site (usually under "Privacy").
Nb: The popular Google Toolbar pop-up blocker has no deleterious effect on this site's display.
  • Another display problem involves the privacy settings in your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) having the much the same effect as a firewall.
  • The only "third party cookies" used are by our links to popular bookmarking sites. The browser can misinterpret these as a use of "third party cookies" and will block them... Usually there are no other ill effects.
A solution is to enable all cookies for this site only. We do not use tracking cookies, only session cookies in our Guëstbook.
  • Finally, JavaScript. This site uses it on every single page... It handles the display of e-mail addresses, window re-sizing and form checking. Totally harmless.
This list is by no means exhaustive; nor are the recommendations above guaranteed to work or not to have unexpected side effects... If you are not sure, ask someone knowledgeable before changing anything.

Q: How can I make the Schooner Atlantic my home page?
A: Although we suspect that no-one will ever decide to do this,

This will set Atlantic as your home page. That's the page your browser (IE or Firefox) starts with...

Q: Why do the full size pictures on the site sometimes take a long time to appear?
A: Some are of a relatively high definition for web images (300dpi) so load slowly...
The thumbnail system allows a rapid display with low definition. Click on a thumbnail to view the same image in a higher definition.
Tip: You have to wait until the image is entirely loaded before
you can easily view, re-size, save or print it...

Q: Why are the pictures in the album a bit fuzzy when enlarged?
A: Photographic quality images are unwieldy to display on an easily accessible website, so ours represent a compromise between quality and download speed.
Tip: If you need to print the images, keep them small;
otherwise contact the photographer directly for higher definition versions.

Q: How can which photographer took a particular photograph on the Atlantic site?
A: We have tried several systems to get text legends to "stick" to the images, and the most successful one so far is to include the name of the photographer in the file name.
Tip: You can see the name in the address bar of your browser or if you save the photograph...

Q: How can I best view the Atlantic site using an Inmarsat MiniM (narrow-band) connection?
A: This site wasn't designed with Inmarsat in mind, but all the pages except the links and the picture albums are relatively light to download.

Q: Why do I have trouble finding the Schooner Atlantic site using popular search engines?
A: This site isn't well referenced in every search engine or directory, and the slightest typographical error when you enter the name results in poor search results. We are waiting to be listed in the Open Directory, Google and Yahoo, with others to follow, but in the meantime suggest you bookmark our site to find it easily in the future. Forgetting the hyphen www.schooneratlantic.com, reversing the words www.atlantic-schooner.com or using an underscore www.schooner_atlantic.com are often causes of poor results.

Q: I make ship models, where can I get construction plans for the Atlantic?
A: Regrettably, we are not able to supply plans for the Atlantic at this time. If the situation changes we will let those who have contacted us know. We also keep a list of model-making links which may be helpful to you.

Q: I've found a mistake on this site, what should I do?
A: We are not safe from the gremlins which seem to inhabit the Internet, so we would appreciate any feedback about factual errors, typos, doubtful grammar, and broken links; to name but a few...

Q: How can I link to the Atlantic site?
A: Linking to a site such as this is easy, just copy and paste the link button below, or the text...
The button below is at your discretion and can be stored locally... and you are welcome to change
the link text as long as it remains relevant...

Let us know, and we may add a reciprocal link on our site.
Obviously, Web sites with topical subjects, and who link back are preferred... but all are considered.
